Rising inflation and growing inequality are increasing poverty rates across the City. Food banks have been facing record increases in the number of clients and the highest need among users than ever before. The City needs to dramatically deepen supports to address food insecurity and poverty, and invest in measures that will strengthen food sovereignty and make life more affordable for the most impacted communities.

  • Advocate to the provincial government to significantly increase social assistance rates.
  • Expand space and supports to allow for food distribution by community organizations and grassroots groups.
  • Expand the student nutrition program across the city and lower barriers to access.
  • Advocate at the federal level for sustained funding to address food security.
  • Broadly expand access to the TTC fair pass.
  • Fund and implement the Indigenous-led Toronto Poverty Reduction Action Plan.
  • Provide long-term and sustained municipal funding to address food insecurity.
  • Provide measurable poverty reduction targets and publish annual progress reports.
  • In the next phase of the Poverty Reduction Strategy, provide meaningful support to residents impacted by the crisis in affordability.
  • Immediately increase long-term funding and resources to the community sector to address urgent food needs in local communities.
